Happy Labor Day! In case you were curious – Labor Day was created to celebrate the efforts of American employees who have contributed to the strength, well-being and prosperity of not only their company, but their country. Sometimes when you’re caught up in the day to day business of doing your job it is hard to remember that you are making an important contribution to the economic strength of our still-great nation. So, even if you don’t have the day off to revel…Thank you!!!
Have you ever taken a moment to wonder exactly what qualities make for a good employee? Luckily for you Job-interview-site.com speculated the same question. How many of these sought after qualities do you possess?
Communicator – Having the ability to express yourself in a clear manner, whether speaking or in writing/email. There is no such thing as over-communicating.
Self-motivation – Not being afraid to go above and beyond the call of duty to accomplish goals, solve problems or take on new responsibilities. Take the bull by the horns! Don’t wait for someone to tell you what to do next.
Hard worker – Everyone says they are a hard worker, but not everyone lives up to that claim, especially after being on the job for a while. Ask yourself if you are still as willing to go the extra mile today as you were your first few months of employment.
Team player – Most companies consist of teams. Employees who can contribute to the group are considered ideal employees. How nice do you play with others?
Honesty – Be honest about your qualifications and your work. Be willing to receive feedback (both good and bad) to continue to learn and grow.
Giving due credit – Where it’s due. One of the biggest problems in the workplace today is people taking credit for the work or ideas of others. Sadly this is especially prevalent in entry-level management positions.
Good manners – Being pleasant and approachable will never steer you wrong. Saying things like ‘Good morning’ your co-workers, or a warm ‘Hello’ to customers, and ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ go a long way toward making you a favorite employee.
Punctuality – As much as we hate to admit it, time is money. Try your best to show up on time and don’t take unnecessary breaks. Procrastinating and leaving early just won’t sit right with your boss or hard-working colleagues.
Avoid gossip – Always remember that you are at work to make a career/living. Spreading gossip or rumors is counter-productive and mean-spirited. Do you really want to be that person?
