In customer service training we always teach the ‘things you are supposed to do’. You know…smile, greet the customer, ask questions, etc. but what we don’t often discuss is WHY we do what we do. If you are working in this business chances are you are not making millions of dollars per year and are only in it for the money. It is far more likely that you are in this line of work because you don’t merely tolerate people…you (usually) kinda like them and you want to help them in some way while earning a living at the same time. You might even think of it as your way of giving back to the world. Although it’s important to know how to do the tasks associated with your particular job it is MUCH more important to know how to relate to other people on a human level and that calls for a big dose of RESPECT.
First you need to understand what respect actually is. Respect is a basic and important emotion or value that makes us aware of our own humanity. Showing and humbly receiving respect demonstrates that we are not wild animals, but human beings who can understand the difference between merely surviving and living a fulfilling life.
Some people believe that showing respect to others is degrading to themselves. This is absolutely the wrong concept about this emotion! In fact people who have an open appreciation for the contributions others bring into this world are generally happier and more successful themselves.
Here are some easy ways you can show respect to everyone you meet…funny how it sounds just like good customer service!
Listen – If you want a person to know that you truly respect them really tune into them. Look them in the eye when they are talking and don’t interrupt or look at your cell phone. No one will ever complain that you gave them your full attention!
Encourage – If you’ve ever had a bad day; and who hasn’t? You know how much power a few words of encouragement can have. It may not seem like much on your part, but that person will remember that you took an interest in their feelings and well-being. A smile and a few kind words can really turn someone’s day around.
Be helpful – If you notice a co-worker in a quandary help them out if you can. No need to take over their project just offering some advice or a bit of your time can mean a lot.
Say thank you – You’d think it would be just common sense but many people just plain forget to say thank you or to say it sincerely. If you don’t offer your thanks with feeling it is a wasted effort. Make sure that people know that you appreciate them and their actions.
