To the very public disappointment of some employees, the holiday shopping will begin earlier than ever this year. What is curious to me is how many great customer service employees get totally frazzled working with customers this time of year. It’s noteworthy that these same people don’t get wigged out when things get chaotic other times of the year, which tells you this is a mind-set issue. Sound familiar? Here are some tips to help you keep your calm when glad tidings turn turbulent.
If a customer treats you poorly, detach yourself remember you are representing the company not you personally. Let’s face it, customers are not always nice and contrary to popular belief, they are not always right. But that doesn’t mean you can argue with them, you’ll have to stay calm, put on your big-boy pants and get creative when it comes to working with customers who decide to take their stress out on you. Seriously! Don’t take their bad behavior to heart – it’s not really about you
Be honest. No matter what products or services you are supposed to move. Something’s going to work for the customer or it’s not. It is always much better to tell the truth. Period.
Keep your focus on the customer. Be charming and self-assured but don’t talk about yourself too much. It’s fine to recommend something that would work for the customer, but don’t suggest something that isn’t right for them simply because you like it.
Mind your health. It’s easy to get run down when things get hectic. Be sure to drink plenty of water and eat well to stay hydrated and energized. Take some quiet time each day to invigorate and rejuvenate.
