Build a better work day

Everybody plans. We all have ideas about what we want to do and work on things we have to do. But what about planning how you want your workday to go? You’re going to be there anyway so why not map out a better day.  Here’s how to do it.

Get an earlier start: Yeah I know- I’m not a morning person either, but setting your alarm 1 hour earlier will allow you to start your day slowly, instead of running around rushed and frenzied in the a.m.  Use this time to create a positive framework for your day.  Eat breakfast, enjoy a cup of tea and read the newspaper or your favorite blog, take a walk, spend time with your family or hit the gym with the early-birds. Choose something that will energize you for the rest of the day.

Looking good: Pick out your clothes the night before and have them ready to go (yes, I mean ironed) Show the world that you care about yourself by being well groomed.  And don’t forget your smile! Days are better if people treat you better and the fact is people will treat you better if you look attractive. Feeling pulled together also boosts your confidence and puts you in a more optimistic mood that will  carry you through the day.

Aim to arrive to work 20 minutes early: Don’t roll your eyes at me yet. I know I just asked you to get up early and now I’m asking you to get to work early but hear me out. This extra time gives you the chance to set the tone for the day. Use a to-do list as a visual itinerary and take pleasure in crossing off the tasks as you accomplish them. Tackle any unfinished business or large projects first.

Lean something new: Try to keep an open mind as you go through your work day. Look for the opportunity to learn something new or see something from a different perspective. By doing so you are allowing yourself to grow and improve and prevent the narrow-mindedness that can creep in when we get comfortable in our jobs.

Don’t sweat the surprises: It only makes your day unpleasant. Unexpected things are gonna happen during the day. That’s life. Stay calm and don’t freak out, take another deep breath while you come up with a plan to set things right.

Take a break: For most people this is going to be lunch. But if that’s not going to work today find a few minutes to decompress and not feel hurried, pressured or sought after. Whatever works to make you feel revived and refreshed.

Give thanks: You know that feeling you get when someone gives you a sincere compliment? Foster that feeling in your environment by complimenting someone you work with. Perhaps it has to do with some work they have done or their new shirt. Just be sure your comments are genuine. Nobody likes a brown-noser!

End your day on time: That’s right – leave on time. Save your last half hour for finishing up.  Make a mental priority list for tomorrow for things that you weren’t able to address today. Now go home and enjoy your  evening!
