Everyone knows you shouldn’t drink alcohol at work, swear, talk about politics, religion or show up wearing dirty clothes! But what about those unspoken rules that aren’t in the company handbook?  How compliant are you with these workplace don’ts?

Don’t forget to separate your social media accounts – LinkedIn is for business. Facebook is for your personal life.  But still…You should assume that your boss or HR is smart enough to find you on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. Don’t post any incriminating pictures of yourself partying over the weekend or anything else you wouldn’t want the president of the company to see. Some parts of your life should remain… intriguingly mysterious.

Don’t ever date your boss or even coworkers – It’s can get messy fast, especially if you break up. Yeah, Yeah, you’re in love and are going to be together forever…nobody goes into a relationship thinking they are going to break up someday but it happens.

Don’t be so fast to click ‘Reply’ or worse ‘Reply to All’ – Take the time to think things through, especially if you are feeling irritated. This tip can save you some heartache in your personal life as well.

Don’t forget to ALWAYS check who is on the TO: and CC: list.

Don’t use company time to make or return personal calls – That’s what your break is for. Even then don’t be insufferable – don’t use speaker-phone and keep you voice on the quiet side.

Don’t ever complain at work – People won’t like you.

Don’t get drunk with co-workers after business hours – Happy Hour is great, but never have more than 1 or 2 drinks.

Don’t make a mess of the break-room – Don’t hog the table space, leave dirty dishes in the sink or let your leftovers go bad in the fridge.  And never ‘borrow’ someone else’s lunch if you’ve forgotten yours.

Don’t eat like you were raised in a barn – Whether you are out to lunch or bring your own, make your Mama proud and use your best table manners. Avoid eating with your mouth open, smacking your food, slouching over the table or pointing with your utensils. You may be on a ‘break’ but please maintain your dignity.  On a side note…Avoid really strong smelling food.

Don’t bend the dress code – Not following the office dress code is a sign of disrespect. ALWAYS follow the dress code or better yet, dress better than the minimum dress code. People who are well-dressed are promoted more often.

Don’t display  – pictures of you and your boyfriend canoodling or you and your girlfriends partying.  Show how a little refinement.

And finally – Don’t ever forget you are in a shared, public space. Always have everyone’s comfort in mind…not just yours.
