Most people perceive themselves to be approachable on the job. But how do others perceive you? Here’s a little self-assessment to help determine where you stand. Next week we’ll chat about ways to let your inner-self shine and become more easily available to others while staying true to yourself.
Like it or not, most people judge us by our appearance. So take a few seconds throughout every day this week to notice what message you’re sending to customers and co-workers.
*Are you crossing your arms or legs? This sends a ‘back off’ message to others
*How about your facial expression? Do you tend to look serious, strained or even stern when you are busy or is your face relaxed – smiling or not? You may be silently telling people you don’t want to talk to them.
*Do you tend to be animated and easy to read or do you hold your emotions close? Are you inclined to show your frustrations publicly?
*What pace do you walk at? A fast clip can make it hard for people to get your attention.
*Do you make eye contact with strangers? Most people avert their eyes when they get within 10 feet of each other. Go ahead; look for a comfortable 2 seconds. I dare you!
