Our unseasonably warm spring has already allowed many of us to swap out our cozy winter sweaters for summer friendly short sleeves. Yeah I get it, summer has a more casual vibe and it’s finally warm out! But customers aren’t going to take you seriously if you look more like you’re headed to a music fest than to work.
Trust me, I know the heat and humidity has an unfavorable effect on your wardrobe. Still, there are just some things you can’t wear to work no matter how hot it gets or how informal your working environment is. You would think much of this would be common sense, yet every year we see far too many wardrobe-etiquette offenders. Confused about the summer dress code? Here are some looks you should never rock at work during the summer:
Flip flops – are for the beach. Seriously I’m begging you! Do not wear flip-flops to work no matter how casual your workplace is. Honestly is there anything more unprofessional than the slap-slap-slap sound of flip-flops across the floor?
Shorts – Unless you’re working as a personal trainer or a camp counselor shorts are probably a no go. You might be able to get away with them in a really informal setting but cut-offs are always off limits, if you do choose to wear shorts make sure they are never denim or shorter than an inch or two above the knee, no one wants to see your thighs at work.
Sleeveless – If it gets hot enough you may be tempted to wear a sleeveless top to work, but unless you are a life guard, we’ll advise against it. This goes for tank tops, strapless, halter tops and spaghetti straps. Even if worn under a jacket this look is still is more cocktail party than work appropriate.
Sports team or message shirts – from shirts bearing your favorite baseball teams logo to tee’s that feature your favorite band or recent vacation spot, as much as you love them you’re going to have to leave your favorite leisure activities and personal tastes at home. No pouting about it allowed.
Anything sheer – Lighter weight fabrics can be see-through and you might need to wear something underneath them to avoid embarrassment. Look in the mirror and under different lights. Guy’s you’re not excluded from this either (a summer tan and a white dress shirt…enough said)
Warmer weather is not an excuse to throw professional appropriateness out the open window. Your clothes should be neat and pressed, your hair done and umm… you should smell good. If you are wondering if you can ‘get away’ with wearing something – you probably can’t.
