Where’s your motivation?

Are you struggling to keep your New Year’s resolution?  It’s not surprising; most people start to lack motivation a few weeks into trying to form new habits.  We start to make excuses in order to justify giving up on the goals we had such enthusiasm for such a short time ago.  Do any of these sound familiar to you? “I’m too busy, tired or lazy” “I don’t really need to change” or “It’s doesn’t seem worth the effort”.

Your objectives are still important to you, but change just seems so hard. These excuses are really just your psyche trying to keep you in your comfort zone. And the good news is you don’t have to settle for it! Here are some ideas to help keep you on track.

  1. Get re-motivated! A great way to do this is to list the pros and the pros.  List all the benefits your new conduct will bring, and then do the same for doing things the same way you’ve always done them.  Surprising eh! Be honest as you compare the 2 lists and decide where you’d rather be and why.
  2. Forgive yourself. If you’ve “messed up” let go of the all or nothing attitude and start again.
  3. Stay positive.  When you feel yourself start to make excuses, give yourself an optimistic and compassionate pep talk or speak to a friend you know will cheer you on.
  4. Visualize how you want things to be – daily.
  5. Reward yourself. Treat yourself to yourself small frequent rewards for good behavior.
